Like many private and public sector businesses, the Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch came to realize that an open office concept could be effective for their workplace. The previous layout revealed most staff were in private offices and had restricted interaction elsewhere with only one large meeting room and a large file room. However, their work processes included many team meetings and collaboration; while others were often out in the field, leaving desks empty for many hours each day.
While the renovation did not add real estate, each square foot was reassigned. Glass partitioned private offices were pushed to the core still allowing natural light to spill in. Smaller workstations were grouped at windows to share the views and share dialogue among teams. Archival documents became electronically stored, so the file room was replaced with multiple small collaboration zones. The staff kitchen was also modified to a multifunctional lounge and meeting zone with ample seating and audio visual technology. The space was infused with brightness and warmth applying white, blue and warm oak throughout. Angular vertical stripes in millwork and upholstery added a dynamic refreshing energy.
